The European Commission has now opened the pre-registration for cities interested in participating in the mission of 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030. The formal call for applications will open later in November, but there is already a lot of material available to prepare.
The mission of 100 climate-neutral cities is described by the European Commission as follows: "It is a great opportunity for the European Commission, Member States, regional and local authorities government agencies, the private sector and citizens to create a new and innovative partnership that can lead the way in the global climate transition. The European Commission calls on city leaders to step up and be bold and creative to ensure future-proof governance, and pave the way for other cities to follow suit.
The European Commission's information material consists of two parts. Part 1 is a practical guide to help cities prepare to apply for participation in the mission. Part 2 is a brief guide to climate neutrality in cities and is intended to provide guidance for the implementation of the mission.
A document with frequently asked questions and answers is also available. It is based on the webinar "The Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission" held on October 1 and will be updated on a regular basis.
Cities can thus register here in preparation for the call for expressions of interest. In the latter, interested cities will be asked to provide information on their current status, ongoing work and future plans for climate neutrality. Cities that register will receive the link to the questionnaire by email when the call for expressions of interest opens.
