Borlänge hooks arms with Ulricehamn.

Borås and Ulricehamn transition arena

Borås aims to be fossil-free by 2030, and with that goal in mind, the municipality is taking overall responsibility as a cog in the transition. Together with companies, organizations and citizens, the whole of Borås is mobilizing in the true spirit of "knalle". They are working with green frameworks for financing, sustainability roadmaps for events, hackathons, citizen involvement, open dialogues and much much more.

Borås will be fossil-independent by 2030. The City of Borås cannot implement the transition on its own, but the municipality has an overall responsibility for community planning and municipal services that are cogs in the transition to a climate-neutral and socially sustainable society. Together with companies, organizations and citizens, the whole of Borås is mobilizing with a real "banging spirit".

Among other things, the municipality has linked arms with Science Park Borås, Navet Science Center, Fristadbostäder and Borås Energi och Miljö and together formed a cross-sectoral innovation team that for three years has tested methods and working methods together with others to promote progress in the transition issue.

For three years, Borås has also tested various methods of citizen dialogue and citizen engagement, including dialogues between young people and politicians, recurring panel discussions at the city library, hackathons, carpooling and climate council teams. The climate council team was arranged together with the Climate Trick Day in the autumn of 2024 and resulted in six recommendations and 23 concrete proposals to Borås City politicians for how Borås can become a more sustainable and climate-friendly city - directly from the citizens.

The City of Borås is also mobilizing in the area of events, and ahead of the Swedish Championship Week in Borås 2025, the project group, together with Climate Neutral Borås 2030, has developed sustainability roadmaps in four different areas: food, textiles, transport, and volunteers. The plans are based on people as enablers and that the work with the Swedish Championship Week is an engine for the transition.

Deep dive into Borås' transition

In the city's latest update, they talk about the work, the transition arena, the project portfolio and much more.

The City of Borås has a modern vision of thoughtful and sustainable urban development that looks to the future and has people at its center. Borås City has decided on a green financial framework, which means that we can finance sustainable investments by turning directly to capital investors who want to make a difference for the environment. Just like the water in Viskan, Borås never stands still and therefore we continue to work to strengthen our climate leadership, collaborate and create good conditions for increased sustainable mobility and sustainable construction in the city.

Borås Climate City Contract 2030

Climate City Contract 2030 is a collective effort to achieve the climate transition that we need to implement in a short time to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees. It is an agreement between municipalities, government agencies and Viable Cities where all parties undertake to make a concrete contribution to increasing the pace of climate change.

Borås invests and tests

To achieve deep change, we need to move from fragmented projects to an ecosystem of efforts that all pull in the same direction. Cities are doing this together with Viable Cities, funders government agencies and other partners, in different constellations and with different objectives. It is about moving beyond dealing with symptoms and instead focusing on underlying problems in our social structure. Here you will find the initiatives and studies within the city that have been granted funding under Viable Cities.

[It does not appear that the city has any ongoing initiatives at this time.]
