Borås aims to be fossil fuel independent by 2030. This goal entails reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent from 1990 levels by 2030. Borås City cannot implement the transition on its own, but the municipality has overall responsibility for social planning and municipal services, which are key elements in the transition to a climate-neutral and socially sustainable society.

One focus for Borås City is to review and further develop its environmental and climate strategy work with the aim of implementing a fair, inclusive, and effective transition. At the same time, the various departments are working to achieve the goals – both independently and in collaboration with others. In this short report, we provide an overview of our work and give you, the reader, an insight into some of the projects that are currently underway.

Deep dive into Borås' transition

In the city's latest update, they talk about the work, the transition arena, the project portfolio and much more.

Borås is a city that never stands still. With the Climate Neutral Cities 2030 initiative, we are taking new steps forward – together with other cities to accelerate the green transition. Together with our twin city Ulricehamn, we are strengthening the development of both cities and learning from each other. The whole of Borås is on board, and we are linking together circular flows in construction, materials, and transport, with every part of the city contributing. For us, ecological construction is the new normal – this can be seen in the Kristinegränd nursing and retirement home, which was built within our green framework, and continues in new buildings such as the Junibacken preschool and Boda Arena. Just as Borås continues to weave the future in textiles, we are now also weaving the future in sustainable urban development – a city that grows, renews and inspires.

Borås Climate City Contract 2030

Climate City Contract 2030 is a collective effort to achieve the climate transition that we need to implement in a short time to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees. It is an agreement between municipalities, government agencies and Viable Cities where all parties undertake to make a concrete contribution to increasing the pace of climate change.

Borås invests and tests

To achieve deep change, we need to move from fragmented projects to an ecosystem of efforts that all pull in the same direction. Cities are doing this together with Viable Cities, funders government agencies and other partners, in different constellations and with different objectives. It is about moving beyond dealing with symptoms and instead focusing on underlying problems in our social structure. Here you will find the initiatives and studies within the city that have been granted funding under Viable Cities.

[It does not appear that the city has any ongoing initiatives at this time.]
