New call for proposals for faster climate transition through collective action

Today, Viable Cities is launching a call for proposals that complements the Climate Neutral Cities 2030 initiative, which currently involves 48 cities.
"It is through the power of many that we can truly elevate cities' ability to accelerate climate change mitigation to the next level," says Olga Kordas, program manager for Viable Cities.

The new call for proposals, Joint Acceleration Towards Climate-Neutral Cities 2030, aims to help more cities take swift and decisive action to reduce climate emissions. Funded projects will reinforce the work begun in 2025 with joint commitments between cities within the Climate City Contract process. Support can be sought when at least one of the cities included in the project consortium has signed Climate City Contract Viable Cities Climate City Contract or a letter of intent for Climate City Contract.

Climate City Contract is a tool for accelerating climate change mitigation and reflects a long-term transition effort. Together with many different actors, goals are set, measures are planned, and investments are prioritized in order to achieve climate goals more quickly and create better places for people to live and work.

Climate City Contract is continuously developed in collaboration between cities, government agencies Viable Cities. A new feature in 2025 to further increase the pace is joint commitments between cities. The ambition is for several cities to work together in concrete ways to pave the way for many more in a number of areas. It is this work that the call for proposals aims to strengthen. Funded projects must involve two or more cities together with at least one research organization.

The call for proposals is open until April 24, and projects that receive funding are planned to start in August. An information meeting will be held digitally on February 18.
