Together for climate-neutral cities

Viable Cities is a strategic innovation program working towards the mission of Climate Neutral Cities 2030 with a good life for all within the boundaries of the planet.

Spy and apply for the transition

Within Spy and apply we highlight local actions that trigger action contributing to the mission: climate neutral cities by 2030 - with a good life for all within the planetary boundaries. Spy and apply to accelerate the local transition journey in all cities and communities.

System demo for climate neutrality

System demonstrators address structural challenges within a defined system and mobilize actors across the societal system to accelerate, scale and amplify the transition to climate-neutral cities and help create the 'new normal'.

Rallying for the mission

There is a lot of work going on in Sweden and around the planet to tackle the climate crisis and transition to a sustainable world. We have put together a short introduction to what Viable Cities is doing and how we are mobilizing together to achieve the mission of climate neutral cities.

Stockholm was one of the first cities to receive the EU's Mission Label for its climate work, and with this in mind, the city continues to work for the transition by connecting, strengthening and further developing existing cooperation structures. Together with the city's stakeholders and citizens, they are investing in increased electrification and more efficient transport, electrified construction, carbon capture and storage, reduced plastic use and increased sorting, and not least an environmental zone in the city - which is also part of the system demonstrator STOLT.

In Gothenburg, there is a strong focus on developing the city's ability to create and utilize citizen engagement in the environmental and climate transition, and in the spring of 2024, the city conducted a so-called citizens' council, where 30 people had the opportunity to contribute with thoughts and suggestions on how the city can engage and involve residents in transforming society for the environment and climate. Gothenburg is also working with a broad toolbox to achieve a more sustainable and efficient mobility system...

What are Viable Cities?

Viable Cities is a strategic innovation program with the mission Climate Neutral Cities 2030 with a good life for all within the planetary boundaries. In the Climate Neutral Cities 2030 initiative - and with the tool Climate City Contract 2030 - the program is working with 48 cities and six government agencies to accelerate the climate transition. The mission-driven work of Viable Cities is closely aligned with the European mobilization around "Mission Climate Neutral and Smart Cities 2030". Viable Cities is a strategic innovation program in a joint initiative by Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Agency and Formas. The program is coordinated by KTH and runs until 2030.
