Ulricehamn Municipality is in the early stages of its work toward becoming a climate-neutral city by 2030. The work is currently focused on building structures for long-term climate transition.
The focus is on creating conditions for concrete measures that can contribute to climate change, but also on strengthening cooperation, both internally within the municipality and together with residents, business regional actors.
Several initiatives in the energy sector are currently in focus, and a number of projects are also underway in the waste management area. In addition, there is a constant focus on the interaction between biodiversity and climate adaptation. By optimizing the use of green structures and other land areas, there are significant gains to be made in terms of climate action.
The goal is to steadily accelerate the pace of climate change, to constantly identify new initiatives and potential projects with the potential to deliver significant climate benefits. Awareness and ambition are continuously increasing, and there is a growing willingness among all parties involved to work more intensively on climate initiatives. Furthermore, climate work is being concretized primarily through the action plan for environmental work, a cross-municipal waste plan, and the adoption of the region's climate pledges and challenges. The goals are the same as in 2024, but extensive changes will be implemented in the coming years to streamline and refine climate work.
In the city's latest update, they talk about the work, the transition arena, the project portfolio and much more.

Ulricehamn Municipality advocates conducting inventories of its own land holdings in order to identify sites that can be included in the fight against climate change. There are often areas where current use is limited; in some cases, the land may instead be suitable for rewetting, tree planting, or some other climate-friendly measure. Many areas can also be included in the work to prepare the municipality for the coming changes, for example by improving stormwater management or reducing the risk of heat islands. In addition to the climate benefits, intensive work on green infrastructure is expected to provide a great deal of added value, for example in the form of improved public health, both in terms of physical and mental well-being.
Climate City Contract 2030 is an effort to manage the climate transition that we need to implement in a short time to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees. It is an agreement between municipalities, government agencies and Viable Cities, in which all parties undertake to make a concrete contribution to accelerating the climate transition. The letter of intent is a preparation for signing the contract next year.
To achieve deep change, we need to move from fragmented projects to an ecosystem of efforts that all pull in the same direction. Cities are doing this together with Viable Cities, funders government agencies and other partners, in different constellations and with different objectives. It is about moving beyond dealing with symptoms and instead focusing on underlying problems in our social structure. Here you will find the initiatives and studies within the city that have been granted funding under Viable Cities.
