In the spring, the municipal council adopted the Energy and Climate Program for Alvesta Municipality. The program contains the municipality's goals and ambitions in terms of energy, climate transition, and climate adaptation. Prior to the decision, efforts were made to gain broad political support, and when the decision was taken in the municipal council, the tone was positive regardless of the politicians' party affiliations. This bodes well for the work on climate action plans. The vision for Alvesta Municipality is to become climate neutral and adapted to the climate changes that may occur in 2045.
Quotes from 4 out of 10 members of the municipal council who spoke when the program was up for decision:
"The climate is under severe pressure. Our children and grandchildren will have to deal with the emissions we are producing now, and that doesn't feel good. We must become better at managing our emissions. No one can do everything, but many can do a little. Alvesta's energy and climate program offers hope and a ray of light in this regard." – Lars-Olof Pettersson Alvesta (S)
“A program that is a crucial tool for driving the transition to a sustainable society. Not just in theory, but in practice. This is about the future of our local community. This program shows that Alvesta Municipality is taking responsibility. This program is not a burden, but an opportunity” – Golnoush Lundén Keshavarzi Faez (C)
"This issue affects and engages many people. It concerns the kind of society we leave behind. This is important and crucial work. Now we need to back up our fine words here with action" – Claudia Crowley Sörensson (M)
"These issues are extremely important and affect everyone sitting here. We are politically united on this issue" – Lars Eriksson Alvesta (SD)
In the city's latest update, they talk about the work, the transition arena, the project portfolio and much more.

Our work with LED lighting, which will also be smarter with features such as night-time dimming. Reduces energy consumption, lowers energy and operating costs (longer service life, reduced maintenance) and improves traffic safety.
Our work with a fossil fuel-free vehicle fleet. Collaboration is required between the purchasing department, administration/company, and real estate companies. This work began by working with vehicles on a category-by-category basis. Additional benefits include a clear understanding of what applies in the municipality regarding vehicles in service and what responsibilities are held within the municipality's administrations and companies. Since this work began, the number of cars in the group has been reduced.
Climate City Contract 2030 is a collective effort to achieve the climate transition that we need to implement in a short time to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees. It is an agreement between municipalities, government agencies and Viable Cities where all parties undertake to make a concrete contribution to increasing the pace of climate change.
To achieve deep change, we need to move from fragmented projects to an ecosystem of efforts that all pull in the same direction. Cities are doing this together with Viable Cities, funders government agencies and other partners, in different constellations and with different objectives. It is about moving beyond dealing with symptoms and instead focusing on underlying problems in our social structure. Here you will find the initiatives and studies within the city that have been granted funding under Viable Cities.
