Nacka, fall 2025. Everything we do counts! Nacka Municipality has the ambitious goal of becoming a climate-positive and circular municipality by 2040. We see every initiative in the transition as important—nothing is too small to make a difference. Everything we do counts. As a municipality, we will lead the way with high ambitions and concrete actions. Collaboration and innovation with academia, experts, and other public actors is important. To succeed in the transition, we also want to engage the residents of Nacka to make climate-smart choices in their everyday lives and support Nacka companies and organizations to grow in a sustainable direction.

In March 2025, the municipal council unanimously adopted new climate and environmental targets for Nacka. These consist of three focus areas and three impact targets per focus area.

  • Nacka aims to be climate positive and circular by 2040. This means that we will reduce our climate impact by an average of 12% annually for both the municipal organization and Nacka as a whole.
  • Nacka should have vibrant natural and aquatic environments, and by 2040, Nacka residents' access to nature and water should increase, preferably every year. Greenery and water should be integrated into densely populated areas, and the proportion of protected nature, as well as our contribution to biodiversity, should increase.
  • Nacka should be climate-adapted and healthy, which means that areas exposed to climate-related risks such as flooding and heat islands should be reduced. The same applies to exposure to harmful noise and hazardous substances in soil, water, and materials.

During the year, Nacka's transition work has focused on integrating the new climate and environmental goals into the municipality's steering documents and processes. The climate and environmental goals have been integrated into the goals and budget to create a unified approach and link the economic goals with the climate goals. In connection with the decision on the goals, a heading was introduced in all political service documents for the assessment of climate and environmental consequences, which in a natural way highlights climate and environmental issues in virtually all activities.

The focus of climate change going forward is to engage Nacka residents and businesses even more in the transition.

The municipality of Nacka is experiencing urban development, with the construction of new housing and the exploitation of unspoiled land. New construction involves the exploitation of land with high natural values. To ensure that protected species in the swamp forest are not adversely affected, Nacka is taking several protective measures that also create more involvement.

  • This fall, Nacka is inviting residents aged 16 and up to take part in a sustainability challenge via the Deedsterapp a fun and educational climate journey on your mobile phone. By performing so-called Deeds (small, concrete actions), participants can reduce their climate impact, learn more about sustainability, and be inspired to adopt new habits. We are making the transition together: the municipality, residents, entrepreneurs, and civil society!
  • Energy box with various types of meters can be borrowed from libraries for energy and climate advice: Residents of Nacka can now borrow an Energy Box from any library in Nacka. The box contains equipment that helps identify energy wasters in your home, association, or business. Borrowing the Energy Box is free of charge—all you need is a library card.
  • In collaboration between climate, environment, and digitalization, we use Power BI to make available the results of our environmental expenditure analysis, which shows the climate impact of our purchases. The aim is to make it clearer to businesses how the municipality's emissions are distributed and, in the long term, to be able to compare and follow developments over time. The goal is to be able to adjust business practices and purchasing patterns in order to achieve the greatest effect in reducing emissions.
  • Nacka Municipality is investing in fossil-free construction sites along Värmdövägen, including at Kyrkstigen and Sickla Industriväg. All machinery and transport there runs on HVO100 – a renewable fuel that significantly reduces climate impact compared to fossil diesel. Over the coming year, this method is expected to save around 215 tons of carbon dioxide – equivalent to approximately 39 laps around the earth in a petrol-powered car. In collaboration with Skanska, Nacka is demonstrating that fossil-free alternatives work in practice and that sustainable construction is not only possible but also effective.
  • Pike factories and playful elves – Nacka's wetland package offer many benefits! The wetland package is a joint effort by Nacka Municipality to recreate, restore, and establish new wetlands. Historically, wetlands have been drained and reclaimed for various purposes, such as construction, forestry, and agriculture. By restoring, rehabilitating, and creating new wetlands, these contribute to increased water levels in the landscape, carbon storage, recreational values, and strengthened and increased biodiversity.
  • Nacka's ongoing projects Outdoor Environment Improvement aims to improve the outdoor environment in Nacka's schools and preschools. The playgrounds are being surveyed and deficiencies identified, and efforts are being made to inspire play, learning, and physical activity. At the same time, measures are being taken to increase greenery and biodiversity in the playgrounds, phase out hazardous substances, manage stormwater, and plant heat islands. The work creates many multiple benefits and is based on good cooperation between several activities in the municipality.
  • Sustainable Challenge is the name of Nacka Municipality's innovation competition, which is held every two years. The competition is aimed at pupils in Nacka's municipal primary schools and is an excellent opportunity to work with entrepreneurship, sustainable development, and creativity. The invention/idea should contribute to sustainable social development, be innovative, unique in its kind, and feasible to implement. Follow the link for instructions on how the competition works and what criteria the jury uses.
  • The Climate Boxreducesfood waste! Nacka's schools and preschools serve around 3 million meals per year. Unfortunately, not all of this food ends up in the stomachs of children and students; some is left over and cannot always be used. To save leftover food, we have introduced the "Climate Box," which allows students and staff to fill a lunch box they bring with them with leftover food after lunch. They pay the cost price of the food, and the payment is made to the school or preschool's Swish number.
  • Nacka's reuse networkaimsto increase the conditions for reuse and circular economy through collaboration and knowledge exchange. The reuse network was started in June 2016 on the initiative of the waste group at Nacka Municipality. The purpose of the network is to increase the conditions in Nacka for reuse and circular economy, such as borrowing, renting, sharing, repairing, and upgrading, through collaboration and knowledge exchange. Through the exchange of experiences, inspiration, and joint efforts, we are laying the foundation for tomorrow's sustainable and circular society.
  • Nacka's big climate relay In the fall of 2025, Nacka is inviting residents to take part in a climate relay race – a fun sustainability challenge in the Deedster app where Nacka residents can: 1) Learn more about sustainability and climate, 2) Try out climate-smart habits in everyday life through small concrete actions (known as Deeds), 3) See their own climate impact and how individual choices make a difference, and 4 )Contribute to collective change and inspire others to participate. The climate relay is part of the implementation of Nacka's climate and environmental program 2025–2040, in which the municipality has set ambitious goals to reduce climate impact and strengthen environmental work. To achieve these goals, the whole of Nacka must be involved – not just the municipality itself, but also residents and business. The background to this is that research shows that meaning, participation, and local anchoring are crucial for engagement in climate issues. People want to feel that their actions matter. That is why Nacka is using a positive and inclusive approach – a digital climate challenge that combines knowledge, community, and small everyday actions that benefit the climate.

Nackas Climate City Contract 2030

Climate City Contract 2030 is a collective effort to achieve the climate transition that we need to implement in a short time to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees. It is an agreement between municipalities, government agencies and Viable Cities where all parties undertake to make a concrete contribution to increasing the pace of climate change.

Nacka invests and tests

To achieve deep change, we need to move from fragmented projects to an ecosystem of efforts that all pull in the same direction. Cities are doing this together with Viable Cities, funders government agencies and other partners, in different constellations and with different objectives. It is about moving beyond dealing with symptoms and instead focusing on underlying problems in our social structure. Here you will find the initiatives and studies within the city that have been granted funding under Viable Cities.

[It does not appear that the city has any ongoing initiatives at this time.]
