Skellefteå is working to become climate neutral with a focus on sustainable mobility, sustainable construction, and sustainable industry. We are investing in better public transport, more walking and cycling paths, and innovation in future mobility.

Since 2024, the municipality has taken several important steps: a new energy plan has been completed, Skellefteå drone port has been inaugurated, and the work of Sustainable Skellefteå has been strengthened. In addition, the municipality has further developed the use of sustainability analyses in the investment process, intensified investments in charging infrastructure, and we are now scaling up energy efficiency with the help of AI and smart data solutions. The goals are clear:

  • The municipal organization shall be climate neutral by 2030 at the latest.
  • The entire city of Skellefteå will be climate neutral by 2040

Decisions are made by the municipal council, but implementation is driven by broad collaboration through Climate City Contract .

We are particularly proud that Skellefteå has succeeded in combining rapid transformation of an entire community with ambitious climate goals. We are proud of our major green industry initiatives, investments in sustainable urban development, and bold projects such as Sweden's longest wooden bridge and tallest wooden building.

Nature-based solutions and co-creation in Skellefteå

In Klockardalsparken, Skellefteå municipality has worked on five different nature-based solutions to improve health and well-being in the city. The park now acts as a brake for rainwater flows and part of the area, which is now a wetland meadow, also enhances biodiversity.

2025

  • Campus ACE demonstrateshow circular construction can be implemented on a large scale, with the reuse of materials such as windows, fixtures, and building components, which both reduces the climate footprint and creates innovative solutions.
  • Örjansskolan is another example where reuse is integrated into school construction, with materials from demolished buildings given new life in a new school environment. These projects show that reuse is not only possible but also attractive and cost-effective. The project is a concrete example for other municipalities that want to implement reuse in educational environments.

2024

Skellefteå highlights further actions that they believe may be of particular interest to other municipalities to spy and apply. Contact the process leaders to spy and apply.

  • Skellefteå Kraft promotes biodiversity in power lines by creating environments that favor local species and vegetation. They collaborate with the community, where young people from sports teams take part in work activities that support this work, while receiving compensation for the team fund and learning about environmental work.

  • Skellefteå municipality is working intensively to reshape the city's traffic flows to promote sustainable transport. The work also includes investments in greener urban environments with tree plantings and electrically powered machines to reduce emissions.

  • By using procurement for development, Skellefteå municipality has achieved various successful results. For example, by procuring a long-term contract for an electric truck, the transition was made possible for the supplier, who can now offer fossil-free services to other customers in the region.
  • In November, Skellefteå municipality organizes Society Summit 2024, which aims to bring together actors from public organisations, academia and business to explore, among other things, how public procurement can be a powerful tool for reducing climate emissions.
  • In Skellefteå, through projects such as Ecolink, waste heat from heating plants and industries is used to heat streets and buildings, reducing the need for new energy sources and promoting efficient use of resources. This not only helps to reduce climate emissions, but also creates long-term sustainability and financial savings.
  • The municipal companies Skellefteå Kraft and Skellefteå Airport built a 1 MWh charger for electric aircraft. Through this collaboration, the region has taken a leading role in sustainable transportation and innovation in the aviation industry, and an electric flight school has been established in Skellefteå.

Skellefteås Climate City Contract 2030

Climate City Contract 2030 is a collective effort to achieve the climate transition that we need to implement in a short time to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees. It is an agreement between municipalities, government agencies and Viable Cities where all parties undertake to make a concrete contribution to increasing the pace of climate change.

Skellefteå invests and tests

To achieve deep change, we need to move from fragmented projects to an ecosystem of efforts that all pull in the same direction. Cities are doing this together with Viable Cities, funders government agencies and other partners, in different constellations and with different objectives. It is about moving beyond dealing with symptoms and instead focusing on underlying problems in our social structure. Here you will find the initiatives and studies within the city that have been granted funding under Viable Cities.
