Right now, Avesta Municipality's transition work is focused on engaging colleagues, Avesta residents, and the business community in a joint learning process to accelerate climate change together. We want to create participation and collaboration between the municipality, residents, and businesses to find solutions and strengthen local responsibility.
This is being achieved through several ongoing and planned initiatives, including:
In 2026, Avesta Municipality will launch a learning project in which four to five medium-sized local companies will be invited to participate in joint learning activities on various themes. The aim is to increase knowledge about climate transition, create a local transition team, and facilitate early dialogue ahead of local procurement.
The Climate Secretariat, which has developed Avesta Municipality's carbon budget, is participating in parts of the project. The Procurement Center (UHC) can participate in discussions related to environmental requirements, competitive advantages, and procurement procedures. Dalarna University and Dalarna Science Park have also been asked to participate.
The project can then continue with new groups each year to gradually build up a broader local transition team.
Avesta Municipality's overall goals are set out in the Sustainability Program, the Recycling Plan, and the Goals and Budget. The Sustainability Program covers four target areas that guide the municipality's work toward ecological, social, and economic sustainability.
One specific goal is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 17 percent per year in order to achieve climate neutrality by 2045. Decisions on goals and governing documents are made by the municipal council, which ensures political support for the entire organization's sustainability work.
In the city's latest update, they talk about the work, the transition arena, the project portfolio and much more.

Each unit within Avesta Municipality has its own sustainability representative who meets a couple of times a year to discuss opportunities and challenges within their respective operations. The meetings contribute to shared learning and inspiration – most recently with the theme of Sustainable IT.
The research project "Sustainable Avesta" is now moving from concept to action. After three successful neighborhood workshops in Avesta, Krylbo, and By, residents have begun to realize their ideas—something that strengthens both sustainability and local community.

Climate City Contract 2030 is an effort to manage the climate transition that we need to implement in a short time to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees. It is an agreement between municipalities, government agencies and Viable Cities, in which all parties undertake to make a concrete contribution to accelerating the climate transition. The letter of intent is a preparation for signing the contract next year.
To achieve deep change, we need to move from fragmented projects to an ecosystem of efforts that all pull in the same direction. Cities are doing this together with Viable Cities, funders government agencies and other partners, in different constellations and with different objectives. It is about moving beyond dealing with symptoms and instead focusing on underlying problems in our social structure. Here you will find the initiatives and studies within the city that have been granted funding under Viable Cities.
