Climate-neutral Trollhättan 2030

Trollhättan has been mobilizing for the climate transition for a long time - now the work is scaling up!

Trollhättan's transition arena

Trollhättan has long had the ability to manage crises through transition and collaboration. Today, Trollhättan is a knowledge-intensive node in Västra Götaland and the engine of several innovations in circularity, manufacturing and mobility. With the ambition to continue on this path, climate work has been stepped up. In 2020, the policy adopted climate targets and a carbon budget in line with the Paris Agreement and in 2024 the municipality joined Viable Cities. Participation in Climate Neutral Cities 2030 aims to establish a long-term strategic process for transformative climate governance that facilitates the municipality, business, civil society, residents and academia to accelerate Trollhättan's climate transition.

The initiative scales up the group collaboration Climate Roadmap by developing and annually revising a Climate City Contract and a climate investment plan. The initiative also forms a transition arena, develops methods for transformative collaboration, and mobilizes and orchestrates a wide range of actors. The arena runs a portfolio of initiatives that act on Trollhättan's priority climate challenges, show the potential to strengthen business competitiveness and support fair and equitable climate transition. Together with Climate 2030, the sub-regions in Västra Götaland and the pioneer cities of Mariestad, Gothenburg and Borås, forms of inter-municipal collaboration are being explored through a regional Transition Lab.

Trollhättan has a clear climate goal, we will reduce our emissions by 14% per year. To strengthen our transition work, the city council has decided on the Climate Roadmap. It is a group-wide effort where we together gear up within our biggest challenges: transportation, energy, construction and consumption. It is about all of us and how we make a difference for the future, and through Viable Cities we have the opportunity to further join forces with academia, business and associations. We look forward to learning together with other cities in Viable Cities.

The city is currently working on collecting good examples of how they mobilize and work for the climate transition. They will be here soon!

Trollhättan declaration of intent

Climate City Contract 2030 is an effort to manage the climate transition that we need to implement in a short time to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees. It is an agreement between municipalities, government agencies and Viable Cities, in which all parties undertake to make a concrete contribution to accelerating the climate transition. The letter of intent is a preparation for signing the contract next year.

Trollhättan invests and tests

To achieve deep change, we need to move from fragmented projects to an ecosystem of efforts that all pull in the same direction. Cities are doing this together with Viable Cities, funders government agencies and other partners, in different constellations and with different objectives. It is about moving beyond dealing with symptoms and instead focusing on underlying problems in our social structure. Here you will find the initiatives and studies within the city that have been granted funding under Viable Cities.
