Värmdö - the sustainable meeting place of the archipelago!
Värmdö municipality, with over 10,000 islands, is attractive for its proximity to extensive nature and archipelago while Stockholm is within reach - about 30 minutes by bus. The municipality's long-term climate goal is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045. To achieve this, greenhouse gas emissions need to be halved by 2030 from the 2019 emission level. According to the municipality's environmental report 2024, emissions are decreasing rapidly within the municipal organization but not nearly as fast in the geographical municipality. This requires action that engages residents.
Climate Neutral Värmdö 2030 aims to address the climate challenges that the municipality cannot solve on its own. It is about reducing greenhouse gas emissions from consumption and traffic, on land and at sea, but also the need for a more sustainable energy supply and to make the climate transition equal and socially sustainable.
Local authorities have a key role to play in creating the conditions for a faster, fairer and more inclusive climate transition.
Through the initiative's transition arenas, we create meeting places for discussion, system innovation, learning and collaboration between local businesses and associations, young and old, as well as with our neighboring municipalities, researchers and government agencies. By 2030, the initiative is expected to contribute to reduced greenhouse gas emissions, electrification, fossil-free transport, increased consumption of seafood, reduced food waste, sustainable energy solutions and improved gender mainstreaming.
In addition to the climate transition, preparedness issues are important in the municipality, especially in the archipelago. Here we can achieve both climate goals and preparedness goals at the same time in the form of local fossil-free energy production and more. The county administrative board is a central partner that will develop essential services and preparedness in the Stockholm archipelago in 2025, where Möja (Värmdö municipality) is one of three pilot islands. In September 2025, the Nämdö Archipelago National Park was also inaugurated - the first of its kind in the Baltic Sea. This is a testament to the high natural values of this part of the municipality's archipelago and a way to ensure continued sustainable management of natural resources and biodiversity.
In the city's latest update, they talk about the work, the transition arena, the project portfolio and much more.

The city is currently working on collecting good examples of how they mobilize and work for the climate transition. They will be here soon!
Climate City Contract 2030 is a collective effort to achieve the climate transition that we need to implement in a short time to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees. It is an agreement between municipalities, government agencies and Viable Cities where all parties undertake to make a concrete contribution to increasing the pace of climate change.
To achieve deep change, we need to move from fragmented projects to an ecosystem of efforts that all pull in the same direction. Cities are doing this together with Viable Cities, funders government agencies and other partners, in different constellations and with different objectives. It is about moving beyond dealing with symptoms and instead focusing on underlying problems in our social structure. Here you will find the initiatives and studies within the city that have been granted funding under Viable Cities.
