Värmdö - the sustainable meeting place of the archipelago!
Värmdö municipality's vision is to be the archipelago's meeting place by 2030 and to be at the forefront of the transition to long-term sustainability. The municipality, with over 10,000 islands, is one of the fastest growing in the country, attractive for its proximity to nature, the archipelago and the city.
Värmdö's long-term climate goal is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045, which was adopted by the municipal council in 2020. The municipality is based on the municipality's key role in creating conditions for a faster, fairer and more inclusive climate transition. The initiative aims to address the climate challenges that Värmdö faces but which the municipality cannot solve on its own. These include greenhouse gas emissions from traffic, on land and at sea, from consumption, the need for sustainable energy supply, and the need to integrate social sustainability into the climate transition. By linking the project consortium with local, regional and national actors, the initiative is expected to contribute to reduced greenhouse gas emissions, electrification, fossil-free transport, increased knowledge of seafood, sustainable energy solutions and improved gender mainstreaming. The core is the transition arena that is being established to increase the pace of Värmdö's climate transition journey through collaboration, innovation and testing of new solutions using system innovation.
In addition to transition, preparedness issues are important in the municipality, especially in the archipelago. There is a need for a secure energy supply and the development of service and safety points. In 2024, the County Administrative Board is mapping essential services and preparedness in the Stockholm archipelago, where Möja is one of three pilot islands. In parallel, work is also underway to make the Nämdö archipelago a biosphere reserve. Important aspects include nature conservation, sustainable society and potential as a pilot area.
In the city's latest update, they talk about the work, the transition arena, the project portfolio and much more.

Climate City Contract 2030 is an effort to manage the climate transition that we need to implement in a short time to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees. It is an agreement between municipalities, government agencies and Viable Cities, in which all parties undertake to make a concrete contribution to accelerating the climate transition. The letter of intent is a preparation for signing the contract next year.
To achieve deep change, we need to move from fragmented projects to an ecosystem of efforts that all pull in the same direction. Cities are doing this together with Viable Cities, funders government agencies and other partners, in different constellations and with different objectives. It is about moving beyond dealing with symptoms and instead focusing on underlying problems in our social structure. Here you will find the initiatives and studies within the city that have been granted funding under Viable Cities.
