Sweden Local2030 Hub to support local efforts

To support the local implementation of the SDGs, the Sweden Local2030 Hub has been formed, a network of organizations in Sweden and the Nordic countries that will work together to promote local sustainable urban development. Viable Cities is one of the members.

The initiative for the Sweden Local2030 Hub comes from the think tank Global Utmaning, which works for sustainable development in social, economic and climate terms. The network is part of the UN's Local2030 initiative, which emphasizes the importance of local platforms that gather knowledge, practical experience, good examples, methods and tools in one place, and have the ability to share them among stakeholders both locally throughout the country and globally.

- Without local ownership and engagement, it will be impossible to achieve the SDGs. This initiative can help make that easier," said Olga Kordas, Program Manager, Viable Cities.

Around 20 organizations from Sweden and the Nordic region that promote sustainable development and sustainable urban development in different ways are part of the newly launched network, including Plan International Sweden, WWF, White Architects and the Swedish Red Cross.

The hub will promote collaboration between urban actors in Sweden, create spaces for international knowledge exchange and build joint capacity for municipalities and local actors to implement the SDGs locally.

- We aim to bridge the needs and experiences of Swedish cities with the needs and experiences of cities around the world," says Elin Andersdotter Fabre, Program Manager Sustainable Cities, Global Challenge.

Sweden is considered to be one of the countries with the best chance of achieving the 17UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to the UN, the conditions for successful urban development include a high level of decentralisation and funding at local level. This fits well with the Nordic cities and municipalities.

The Sweden Local2030 Hub is in the start-up phase but is already planning, among other things, a digital platform for exchange of experience, participation in conferences and presence in social media.
