Nine years of learning and collaboration for climate-neutral cities

The first nine years of the Viable Cities program have now been evaluated. The evaluation shows how the program has evolved into a key platform for climate transition in Swedish cities. Among other things, it highlights how cities have developed new approaches to governance, coordination, and collaboration in their efforts toward climate neutrality.

Climate City Contract is also highlighted as a concrete model for how local, national, and European levels can work together toward a common goal. Through Climate City Contract , many municipalities have been able to integrate climate action into their regular governance and budgeting processes, thereby strengthening the conditions for long-term, strategic climate action.

“The evaluation highlights the strength of the long-term, mission-driven work that has been built up within Viable Cities in collaboration with cities, government agencies, business, academia civil society. It provides us with both a clear summary of the first nine years and an important foundation for the next chapter leading up to 2030 and beyond,” says Olga Kordas, Program Director for Viable Cities.

The nine-year evaluation of Viable Cities is available on Vinnova’s website and among Viable Cities’ publications.
