Local Climate City Contract between business and municipalities are a tool to create a common arena for the climate transition in many 2030 cities. In a new report, we have taken a closer look at what the local variants look like, and how they can be developed.
Viable Cities is based on the premise that collaboration between different actors is required to succeed in the mission of Climate Neutral Cities 2030 with a good life for all within the planetary boundaries. The business community has a key role in the local transition arena, which is built step by step to involve the actors that make the transition happen.
In a new study, we explore the role and opportunities for businesses based on the local Climate City Contract that exist in many of the cities in the Climate Neutral Cities 2030 initiative. The results are collected in the report "Local Climate City Contract as a scaling mechanism for business engagement". The report shows both similarities and differences between the local climate contracts.
- The cities have done a fantastic job of mobilizing over 500 companies based on their local conditions. Some have chosen a broad approach while others focus more on industries. It will be exciting to see how the forms of collaboration develop, especially now with so many new cities," says Lena Holmberg, Viable Cities.
Many different types of companies have signed the local climate contracts, both in terms of size and focus. Several companies have chosen to engage in several cities, while some types of companies have little or no representation.
- "Some cities have managed to get companies from the financial sector on board, but not many," says Lena Holmberg.
- We hope for greater engagement based on the results of the Viable Cities Transition Lab Forum in Lund, which has the theme "Investing and financing for climate neutral cities".
