The Viable Cities project Xplorion was the Building of the Year 2021

The magazine Byggindustrin has named the Viable Cities project Xplorion "Building of the Year 2021" in the housing category. Xplorion is a house that is built to give the residents the conditions to live climate-smart. Collaboration with others has resulted in innovative solutions. For example, there are alternatives to the privately owned car, so only one parking space is needed.

The Building of the Year is awarded every year by Byggindustrin magazine. Out of 72 nominations in six categories, Xplorion was one of six winners. This is how the jury justified their choice:

"Sustainability pioneer in Lund becomes Building of the Year 2021 in the housing category:
With self-generated electricity, electric car pool, flexible floor plan, demand-controlled ventilation and surplus heat from adjacent research facilities, this project shows the way forward for sustainable housing construction, and that it pays to think long-term."

Xplorion is a community residence with climate-smart solutions that make everyday life easier. All so that the tenant can live car-free, sustainable, climate-smart and according to the "Sharing is caring" principle.
- This is really big for us. With Xplorion, we wanted to show the way for future construction and housing through innovative thinking when building in Lund. This would not have been possible without cooperation with other actors," says Håkan Nilsson, property manager at Lund Municipality's real estate company, LKF, which is one of the initiators of the innovation initiative.
The project is based on collaboration both within the municipality and with several external parties such as EC2B, Trivector, OurGreenCar and Kraftringen.
- "We welcome other companies to contact us to take part in our material, processes, lessons learned so far and future evaluations," says Håkan Nilsson.
