Swedish Climate City Contract 2030 inspires Spain

The Spanish cities of Barcelona, Madrid, Seville and Valencia and representatives of the Spanish government signed a letter of intent in September as a first step towards a Spanish Climate City Contract for cities. The inspiration for this comes from Viable Cities' work on Climate City Contract 2030.

- "It feels unreal and wonderful that we have contributed to the development of a Climate City Contract in Spain," says Olga Kordas, Viable Cities Program Manager.

It was on 8 September that the mayors of Barcelona, Madrid, Seville and Valencia and Teresa Ribera, Minister for the Ecological Transition, signed the agreement that will accelerate the transition to climate-neutral and sustainable cities by 2030. Like the Swedish Climate City Contract 2030, the Spanish contract will be a tool to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda.

The agreement falls under the citiES 2030 initiative, supported by the El Día Después (The Day After) platform.

Julio Lumbreras, lecturer at the Polytechnic University of Madrid and coordinator of the cities in the El Día Después (The Day After) platform, said that this collaboration is a "critical element to achieve the cities we want" and that "cities need to be creative, experiment and learn together to find a sustainable way forward".

The agreement is designed to allow other Spanish cities to join in the coming months, so the mayors of Arnedo, Cáceres, Lugo, Níjar, Soria, Teruel, Toledo and Vitoria also took part in the event.
