The AI in Future Sustainable Cities blog series looks at the promise of artificial intelligence (AI) to enable the sustainable smart cities of the future. The posts particularly highlight Sweden and the ambition many of our cities have in line with the Viable Cities mission to be climate neutral by 2030, as part of the fulfilment of the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals in Agenda 2030. The series also highlights relevant and successful AI initiatives around the world and interviews particularly interesting people in this context.
The series aims to analyze the gap that the writers believe exists between AI as an idea and AI applied in reality. The idea is usually (but not always) discussed by non-experts who have learned what AI can do by reading popular descriptions, while the applications are discussed by experts who are deeply immersed in narrow technology challenges and mostly read specialized literature. When those who decide what should happen in a city around AI in the future produce and use decision-making data, this gap can create false expectations and, in the worst case, lead to incorrect decisions. The hope is to highlight and help improve this situation.
The blog series is made within the framework of Viable Cities by AI professors Hedvig Kjellström and Magnus Boman (both KTH) and communicator Marcus Törncrantz. Please contact hedvig@kth.se, mab@kth.se, or marcustorn@gmail.com if you have questions or ideas about the content.
