Good mobility solutions from Sweden highlighted in Brazil

Green travel plans, fossil-free fleet procurement targets and harnessing synergies from national initiatives. Swedish cities and government agencies are inspiring. At the Sweden-Brazil Innovation Week in October, the work being done in Lund and Stockholm on system demonstrators was highlighted, as well as insights from the analysis of transport and mobility from all Climate City Contract 2030 from last year.

Among the areas where cooperation can make a big difference in mobility, the importance of harnessing synergies between national initiatives was highlighted. One example is green travel plans - a tool that helps employers take leadership for more sustainable travel to and from work. It is being developed within CoAction Lund, a system demonstrator in Lund.

Another example relates to long-term targets in procurement. As early as 2003, the City of Stockholm set the goal that the entire city fleet of almost 900 cars would be powered by renewable energy. The target was reached in 2022.

On October 7, Olle Dierks from Viable Cities presented these Swedish examples of how transport can contribute to sustainable cities. The presentation was followed by a panel discussion on experiences and opportunities for collaboration. Watch the video here.

"Sweden and Brazil are well placed to further strengthen cooperation in urban development, and urban mobility is a key issue. I look forward to gearing up further together with Brazilian actors ahead of COP30 in Belém, where cities, energy and technology are in particular focus," says Olle Dierks.

About Sweden-Brazil Innovation Week

The Sweden-Brazil Innovation Week is a platform for the strategic partnership between the two countries in the fields of science, technology and innovation. The aim is to promote Sweden as a long-term innovation partner for Brazil, promote Swedish innovation environments, establish cooperation with Brazilian partners and create a meeting place for Swedish and Brazilian actors in the relevant areas.

This year, Innovation Week celebrates 10 years of innovation cooperation between Brazil and Sweden. In 2025, the Innovation Week focused on the energy transition, with panels in priority areas such as artificial intelligence and decarbonizing supply chains. The event is organized by the Embassy of Brazil in Stockholm and took place on 6 and 7 October 2025, in conjunction with official meetings organized by Swedish government agencies in the following days.

Participants came from governments, funding agencies, the private sector and academia. Discussions focused on priority areas included in the work plan between the two countries (sustainable mining, sustainable cities, bioeconomy and life sciences) and explored new opportunities for cooperation.
