Since 2020, Viable Cities and UN-Habitat, together with partners, have been implementing the Climate Smart Cities Challenge, an initiative for challenge-driven innovation and system demonstrators. In the 2024 edition of the World Cities Report 2024 Cities and Climate Action, the Climate Smart Cities Challenge is highlighted as an example to be inspired by(WCR 2024: Case study annex (pp. 68-70).
The UN-Habitat World Cities Report series, published annually, takes an in-depth look at urban development and highlights new forms of collaboration, planning, governance, finance and learning that can contribute to climate-neutral cities. The report shows that the current model of urbanization is unsustainable and needs to change in order to respond to the challenges of our time, i.e. addressing issues such as inequality, climate change, informality, insecurity and unsustainable forms of urban expansion.
