The call Energy and climate transition for viable cities welcomes project proposals that are based on a holistic perspective on the city and that use digitalization and citizen engagement to achieve a resource-efficient and fossil-free society more quickly. We are looking for pioneering projects that make a difference, in exciting new constellations of actors.
The call is aimed at business, research institutes, academia, public actors, non-profit associations, professional organizations and private companies. At least three parties must be behind each application. For example, it could be a cross-border collaboration between a non-profit organization, a city and a commercial company. The strategic innovation program Viable Cities is part of Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Agency and Formas' joint initiative on strategic innovation areas. Viable Cities announces approximately SEK 42 million.
This call welcomes proposals for projects that are based on a holistic perspective on the city and that use digitalization and citizen engagement to accelerate the transition to a resource-efficient and fossil-free society.
The call offers the possibility of funding four project types, one of which must be selected:
Preliminary studies, aid amount 200 000 - 500 000 SEK
Research projects, funding amount 2 000 000 - 4 500 000 SEK
Innovation projects, SEK 500 000 - 5 000 000
Demonstration projects, 500 000 - 5 000 000 kr.
Supported projects must start between 2018-06-01 and 2018-09-30 and can last until 2021-12-31 at the latest.
The call is intended for project applications at the intersection of the Viable Cities focus areas and thematic areas. Projects should address at least two of the following four focus areas:

The call is jointly conducted by Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Agency and Formas. It is the Swedish Energy Agency that receives the applications and decides, preliminarily in early June, which projects are granted.
On November 8 (Gothenburg), November 10 (Malmö), November 16 (Umeå) and October 24 (Stockholm), information meetings about the call were held. In connection with the information meeting, the Swedish Energy Agency also presented the Making Cities Work call from JPI Urban Europe.
