Valencia - region and city with shared climate commitments

In Spain, the region and the city of Valencia are joining forces in the climate transition, both locally and at EU level. Find out how it works in the report The region as a signatory of the Climate City Contract.

The Valencian Community is one of Spain's 17 autonomous regions (Comunidades Autonomas). These regions have a high degree of autonomy and control over various areas that are important for climate action. At the same time, municipal responsibilities vary according to their demographic size, although all municipalities have mandatory core competences. The City of Valencia has responsibilities in a wide range of areas, many of which are important for local climate action.

The Region of Valencia and the City of Valencia have a long history of cooperation at several levels in different areas, including agriculture and waste management. When discussions on Missions emerged at EU level, both the city and the region expressed a shared political commitment to the issue of climate change. The regional government has therefore supported Valencia's EU Climate City Contract and, vice versa, both the city and regional administrations have decided to join the EU Adaptation Mission.
