By integrating the EU missions as one of the region's specializations, Blekinge has made them a central part of its research and innovation strategy for smart specialization. 

This is because the region recognized the importance of integrating sustainability and climate change into its Smart Specialization Strategy, thus combining economic development with sustainability. In addition, several of the EU missions link to the region's designated specializations - Technology (digitalization and smarter societies) and Smart Industry (marine technologies).

Region Blekinge sees the missions as an effective method in the regional work to address various societal challenges, as it promotes challenge-driven innovation and collaboration between stakeholders from different sectors to develop solutions.
