The transition map

The climate transition depends on many actors working together in new ways. What do we need to do concretely to succeed in the transition? The transition map provides a good overview.

The map provides direction for many processes

The transition map provides an overview of the processes we need to go through to achieve the mission of climate-neutral and sustainable cities. Climate City Contract 2030 plays a crucial role in the work ahead.

The transition map has been developed within NetZeroCities, which supports cities' climate transition within the EU Cities Mission. Viable Cities and several of the 2030 cities have been involved in the development of the tool.

On the NetZeroCities website the map is clickable for more reading.

What is on the map?

The cities in the Climate Neutral Cities 2030 initiative have embarked on an ambitious journey to be climate neutral by 2030. Getting there will require many actors to work together and change how we govern and lead our communities. The transition map provides a simplified overview of what needs to be done.

  1. Build a strong mandate
Create a common direction for actions and investments to achieve climate neutrality.
  2. Understanding the system
The transition needs to be approached from all different perspectives.
  3. Co-create a portfolio
Agree on the actions that need to be taken.
  4. Take action
Plan, implement and monitor your actions.
  5. Learn and reflect
Help spread lessons and experiences to many more.
  6. Create the new normal
Ensure that the new is integrated into ways of working so that new practices are maintained.

Three arrows enclose the six areas above.

  • Climate City Contract 2030 is a tool and a long-term process that ensures that the transition work is moving forward in all areas.
  • An ecosystem that includes everyone in society needs to be created to achieve this goal.
  • We need to ensure that the transition is fair. No group in society should have to do more than others.
