In October 2024, Valencia was struck by a flooding disaster of huge proportions with over 200 people killed, massive material destruction and ripple effects across society. Triggered by this climate related disaster, important work is now underway in Spain to future proof cities and regions where increased risks of future crises and mitigation efforts are integrated. Joining us for this climate breakfast to describe the work underway is Professor Jordi Peris from the Polytechnic University of Valencia researcher in urban transformation and sustainability.

The City of Karlstad is one of the Swedish cities actively working on integrating climate mitigation, climate adaptation including preparedness to societal crises with a wide scope of threats. We will hear from the ongoing work in Karlstad from Henric Barkman who is a core person in the local climate transition team.

The National Knowldge center for adaptation at SMHI, is central to Swedish climate adaptation by disseminating knowledge,  facilitating coordination between authorities with adaptation responsibility, and hosting www.klimatanpassning.se. Anna Blomqvist, climate adaption expert at  the Knowledge center, will talk about the state of the climate today, important things to keep in mind when planning for adaptation, and where we have to go next to strengthen the resilience of Swedish society.

Connecting climate adaptation and climate mitigation work at the local level in practice from a systems risk perspective is a topic of ongoing research of Rebecka Engström at KTH and Viable Cities. More specifically: How can systemic risk analysis (SRA) support cities in building resilience in their actions to quickly reach climate neutrality? She will reflect on previous speakers’ input on the topic for today.

Guests contributing to this Climate breakfast #43 are:

  • Jordi Peris, Professor at the Polytechnic University of Valencia
  • Henric Barkman, Environmental Strategist at Karlstad Municipality
  • Anna Blomqvist, Climate adaption expert at SMHI
  • Rebecka Engström, Postdoctoral Researcher at KTH Royal Institute of Technology

The Climate Breakfast will be held in English.
